Parish Map ProjectThe idea for the map was born out of our 'Dreaming for Real' day that took place in November 1997 at Lavington School. The aim was to initiate a community wide arts project that would involve a large number of villagers and local groups and organisations. When you look closely at the map, you can see that it is made up of many individual contributions and contains a wealth of interest, ideas and creativity, and reflects the many and varied aspects of village life. The whole project was managed and funded by Lavington Arts with support from Kennet District Council and 'Community First'. The task of co-ordinating work on the map was carried out by two local artists, Judy Boyt and Julieanne Worrall-Hood. The first workshop took place in June 1998 where anyone interested in taking part could come along to find out more and learn new skills and techniques to help them create their own unique part of the map. In total, 15 local organisations were represented amongst the many people who attended. All were encouraged to produce a textile section that represented their presence in the village. Many people chose to make images that represented themselves and their families (including pets!), others put in their houses, while local groups and schools reflected the activities in which they are involved. More work was carried out in August at the Lavington Community Market (another Lavington Arts event). The final assembly of the map was undertaken by a dedicated number of willing volunteers from the local area and is a testament to the hard work and enthusiasm of everyone involved. There are plans to hold an open day when the map will be on public display sometime in the Spring so look out for details.
