About Market LavingtonThe parish is situated in the Pewsey Vale, it is 19 miles from Bath, 21 miles from Swindon and is positioned almost exactly in the centre of Wiltshire, on the opposite side of Salisbury Plain from Salisbury. Being right on the edge of Salisbury Plain we have sparse chalk on the high ground but a rich greensand in the valley. There is arable farming as well as sheep and cattle in this mainly agricultural rural area, however in and around the village we also have light engineering, transport, high tech consultancy and retailing. Market Lavington is quite a large village with a population of almost 3,000 with a suprisingly low average age of around 35, a statistic no doubt helped by the fact that the village has both primary and secondary schools and more employment within the village than might be expected. The village grew up on the crossing of the old Salisbury to Devizes, and Westbury to Vale of Pewsey roads. It is at the centre of a pre-historic area of world importance, being half way between Stonehenge and the Stone Circle at Avebury, Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow.
